A skydiver was killed at the Macomb County Airfield. The Landing State Journal said in happened about thirty miles north, northeast of Detroit.
Lt. Michael Shaw said; “ the accident happened about 6:20 pm. Saturday. The nydailynews.com said the Midwest Freefall Sport Club’s manager and members would be remembering him well. They considered him a great friend and parachutist, reported Michael Walsh. The expert diver hit a woman who was just out of the landing field, after he collided with a tree.
The Macomb Daily said he was ‘swooping’ down when he hit the fifty-three year old woman, and she was sent to the hospital for non life threatening injuries. The diver Kenneth R. Bernek of Waterford was treated with CPR, but reported dead after arriving at the hospital.
He was taken by Medstar and Richmond-Lenox Emergency Service Services crews, but to no avail. Assistant Fire Chief Cecil Schoenherr noted that the club had another accident this same season, but that these accidents are relatively rare.
